What a dirty evaporator coil actually costs you
Coil fouling never announces itself. Airflow drops first. Suction pressure follows. The coil runs colder than design and ice forms on the fins. When that ice melts, water overruns the primary pan and finds the ceiling below. Liquid refrigerant returning to the compressor is the expensive ending. That failure costs many times what a cleaning does.
Dallas coils load from the return side, not the supply. Older platform returns often have undersized or bypassed filter racks, so unfiltered attic air reaches the coil directly. Fiberglass liner in 1950s–70s sheet metal trunks sheds fine strands. Attic insulation fibers ride in through leaky return boots sealed with failed cloth tape. Newer builds contribute drywall dust. Long runtime does the rest with pollen and pet dander.
A-coils foul on the inside faces first. The outside can look clean while the inner slab is matted shut. We check with a light before quoting anything. Cleaning means a foaming cleaner and dwell time. Then a controlled rinse. The drain pan and trap get checked too. Brushing a wet aluminum fin pack just folds it over.
Some cased coils have no factory access panel. That means cutting and properly resealing a door. If a coil is bonded solid with fiber and biofilm, pull-and-clean off-site is the honest option. On an aged system, replacement may make more sense than either.
What Happens After You Call Us
Call and tell us how many supply vents and returns you have, and we give you a two hour arrival window with the technician's name. Most days we can be out the same week, and the estimate costs nothing.
We walk the attic runs and open a return before we quote. The price depends on the number of branch runs, the duct type, and whether the blower wheel needs pulling.
We clean the trunk and branches, replace your filter, and run the system so you can feel the airflow at the farthest vent. You pay the quoted number, not a dollar more.
